Travel-insurance premiums change with destination, age, trip length and benefits. AfricanBase therefore does not rank a fixed “top 10 cheapest” list or claim that a provider is embassy-approved without current evidence. This guide shows Nigerian students how to find genuinely affordable cover and includes only provider examples whose travel products could be verified from current official sources.
For Nigerian students, affordable travel insurance should mean appropriate cover at a competitive current quote—not simply the lowest advertised premium. A cheap policy that does not satisfy your visa, university or medical needs can cost more later.
The first question is also not “Which company is cheapest?” It is: What insurance does my destination and institution actually require?
Travel Insurance Is Not Mandatory for Every Student Visa
The previous version of this article suggested that most major study destinations require the same type of travel insurance. That is too broad. Requirements differ by immigration system.
- Schengen short-stay visas: EU rules require travel medical insurance with at least €30,000 coverage and specified territorial/medical protections.
- Long-stay study: countries can impose their own health-insurance, residence or university requirements.
- United Kingdom: student applicants generally pay the Immigration Health Surcharge where applicable rather than satisfying the visa through a generic €30,000 travel policy.
- Canada: healthcare/insurance arrangements depend on the province or territory and institution; do not assume a generic travel policy is a universal study-permit requirement.
- United States: health-insurance arrangements can be institution- or programme-specific; exchange visitors can also face separate regulatory insurance requirements.

How to Define “Affordable” Travel Insurance
A useful affordability comparison keeps the trip details and benefits as similar as possible. Compare:
- the same destination;
- the same departure and return dates;
- the same traveller age;
- similar medical limits;
- similar deductibles/excess;
- emergency evacuation and repatriation;
- baggage and personal-property limits;
- trip cancellation/interruption where needed;
- pre-existing-condition exclusions; and
- territorial and activity exclusions.
A ₦20,000 quote and a ₦35,000 quote are not meaningfully comparable if one covers only emergency medical treatment while the other includes evacuation, baggage and trip interruption.
Current Nigerian Provider Examples to Quote
The providers below are examples for obtaining current quotations, not a cheapest-to-most-expensive ranking and not endorsements. Product availability, eligibility, benefits and premiums can change.
AXA Mansard Student Travel Insurance
AXA Mansard currently publishes a dedicated student travel product for students studying outside Nigeria or travelling on school excursions. Its official benefit table lists medical/hospitalisation abroad, emergency medical evacuation, emergency dental care and repatriation benefits.
Its current website contains an important duration detail: the dedicated Student Plan can apply for up to 180 consecutive days abroad, subject to the policy terms and conditions. That makes it essential for a degree student to plan what happens after the maximum continuous-trip period rather than assuming one travel policy covers several academic years.
Official product: AXA Mansard Student Travel Insurance.
Leadway Travel Insurance
Leadway currently offers international travel insurance for business, leisure and study travel. Its official travel pages describe benefits that can include medical emergencies, evacuation/repatriation, baggage issues and travel disruption, depending on the selected plan.
Leadway’s current quote system calculates the premium from information including destination and travel dates. This is a better basis for affordability than repeating an old fixed premium from a blog article.
Official product: Leadway Travel Insurance.
AIICO International Travel Insurance
AIICO currently offers international travel insurance. Its official information describes benefits including overseas emergency medical/dental expenses, emergency medical evacuation, trip delay/cancellation/interruption, baggage protection and repatriation, subject to the applicable policy terms, limits and exclusions.
Official provider: AIICO Insurance.
Why the Old Top-10 Price Table Was Removed
The previous version listed fixed naira price ranges and detailed benefits for ten Nigerian insurers, including claims such as “embassy approved,” “best for Schengen,” specific medical limits and very low annual premiums. Several of those figures could not be verified against current official product information.
Insurance pricing is also quote-specific. Publishing an old ₦8,000, ₦15,000 or ₦45,000 figure as though it is today’s price can mislead a student whose destination, age or duration produces a very different premium.
AfricanBase will therefore prioritise current insurer quotations and policy documents over estimated price tables.
How Nigerian Students Can Find the Cheapest Suitable Quote
- Check the visa/university rule first. Write down mandatory insurance requirements.
- Choose identical trip details. Use the same destination and dates for each insurer.
- Get current quotes directly. Do not rely on an old premium table.
- Compare medical limits. Make sure the cheaper plan has enough cover for the applicable requirement.
- Compare the excess. A lower premium can come with a higher amount you pay when claiming.
- Check evacuation and repatriation. These benefits can be important even when ordinary medical limits look similar.
- Read exclusions. Pay particular attention to pre-existing conditions, sports and restricted activities.
- Check maximum trip duration. A student product can still be much shorter than your degree.
- Check amendment/refund terms. Understand what happens if your visa is refused or travel dates change.
- Save the policy certificate and wording. Do not rely only on a sales page.
Cheapest Does Not Mean Lowest Medical Limit
If your destination requires a particular minimum medical limit, buying below it is not a saving. But students should also avoid assuming that every destination requires $30,000–$100,000 of generic travel insurance.
The well-known €30,000 minimum comes from the EU Visa Code’s short-stay Schengen travel-medical-insurance rule. It should not be converted into a universal insurance requirement for UK, Canadian, U.S. or other student visas.
Travel Insurance vs Long-Term Student Health Cover
A travel policy can be appropriate for a short academic trip but inadequate as the only healthcare arrangement for a multi-year degree. Check whether you will move onto:
- a university health plan;
- a national/public health system;
- a private international student health plan; or
- another destination-specific arrangement after arrival.
AfricanBase’s Student Travel Insurance for Studying Abroad guide explains these distinctions in more detail. Students going to Italy should also read the Italy Student Insurance guide.
Common Cost-Saving Mistakes
- Buying only by price: compare benefits and exclusions first.
- Trusting “embassy approved” marketing: the authority handling your application decides whether the documentation meets its rules.
- Ignoring trip duration: your policy can end long before your programme.
- Buying duplicate cover: check whether your university already provides mandatory insurance.
- Assuming baggage limits cover your laptop: per-item/sub-limits may apply.
- Ignoring the excess: a cheap premium can still leave significant out-of-pocket costs.
- Assuming cancellation covers every reason: policies normally define covered events.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cheapest travel insurance for a Nigerian student in 2026?
There is no dependable single cheapest provider for every student because premiums depend on destination, age, duration and selected benefits. Obtain current like-for-like quotes from insurers that can cover your trip, then compare the policy terms as well as the price.
Is travel insurance compulsory for every Nigerian studying abroad?
No. Insurance requirements depend on the destination, visa/residence category, university and programme. Some routes require specified insurance; some universities provide or mandate their own plans; and some countries use public or local health systems after arrival.
Is AXA Mansard the cheapest student travel insurance?
AfricanBase has not established that. AXA Mansard has a current student travel product, but you should compare a live quote with other eligible providers using the same destination, dates and comparable benefits.
Does AXA Mansard’s Student Plan cover an entire degree?
Its current website states that the Student Plan can apply for a maximum of 180 consecutive days abroad, subject to policy terms. A student on a longer programme therefore needs to understand the continuing insurance/healthcare arrangement.
Are Leadway and AIICO travel insurance still available?
As of this review, both insurers have current official travel-insurance information online. Product terms and premiums should still be confirmed when requesting a quote.

Final Note
For Nigerian students, the most affordable travel insurance is the lowest-cost current policy that actually satisfies the relevant requirements and provides the protection you need. Get live quotes, compare like for like, read the policy wording and never rely on an old “cheapest” table for a visa decision.
